SUPERVALU

SuperValu is one of the leading public company grocery wholesale distributors and hard discount grocery retailers, operating 2,012 stores. Their supermarkets provide consumers with an expansive selection of food and household products such as organic produce, meat, dairy and essentials from organic growers; online ordering services as well as delivery are also provided through this retailer. In addition to these stores they also operate an expansive network of convenience and specialty stores across North America.

SuperValu can be traced back to Minnesota at the turn of the 19th century when several small wholesale grocers joined together and formed Winston & Newell. Winston & Newell became one of the earliest members of Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA), providing numerous services including food processing and packaging as well as preparation of local newspaper advertising and store planning assistance – it even supplied much of its merchandise sold within its stores!

Winston & Newell transformed independent retail grocery chains into “virtual” chains under names such as Super Valu and U-Save during World War II, eventually becoming the nation’s leading food wholesaler and expanding to include over 560 retail locations nationwide.

As SuperValu entered the 1990s, its wholesale business was growing, but competition from grocery store chains had taken away customers from them. To respond to this threat, SuperValu launched Advantage as an initiative in 1995 in order to revitalize retail operations and strengthen wholesale business.

This included creating a more customer-friendly credit card, streamlining its distribution system to reduce costs for retailers, and developing “market driving capabilities” that would increase sales for its retailers. Furthermore, the company began selling off underperforming retail stores.

SuperValu has made several significant acquisitions over the past year. These acquisitions include Unified Grocers – an established West Coast wholesaler; Market Centre, an Florida specialty distributor; and Associate Grocers of Florida which expanded SuperValu’s presence in Florida. SuperValu has continued its focus on strengthening wholesale business while using retail stores as “laboratories” to test improvement of overall company operations.
