If you’re looking to sell to mass retailers, you’ll need to figure out how to create your product in bulk. This means you’ll need to be able to fulfill orders of 5,000 units or more. This could mean building out a warehouse near your home or working with a manufacturer overseas.

Selling to smaller retailers, such as boutiques, is a lot easier to get into. The only challenge is that it takes a lot more work as you have to open one account at a time and rely on reps for other states. However, if you don’t mind the hustle, there’s no wrong way to sell your product.

Waksman recommends understanding how many different ways you can sell to a retailer. You can sell to the corporate buyer who buys for all their corporate stores, or you can sell to regional buyers who are responsible for 100 stores instead of all thousands of stores. You can also sell to local stores, where store managers and owners can purchase for individual stores.

If you’re selling high-end products, you can also create a new version of the product that’s cheaper and under a different brand name. This can help you make money and sustain your more expensive products.

Bulk Production for Mass Retailers

If you want to sell to a mass retailer, you’ll need to figure out how to create your product in bulk. This could mean building out a warehouse near your home and hiring workers, or working with a manufacturer overseas.

Small Retailers and Boutiques

Selling to small retailers and boutiques is a lot easier, but it requires more work. You’ll need to open one account at a time and rely on reps for other states, unless you’re willing to drive around with your product.

Corporate Buyers

If you want to sell to a large retailer like Macy’s, there is a buyer who buys products for all their stores. This buyer is responsible for buying the product for all their stores.

Regional Buyers

Some retailers have regional buying offices, which means you can sell to them on a regional level. This means that if a retailer has 500 stores, they are responsible for 100 stores instead of all the stores.

Local Buyers

Many retailers allow their store manager and/or owner to purchase for individual stores. This means you can get the big brand name, but only sell to one individual store.

Creating a Secondary Product
